    MEET GRANDMASTER W.S. Jeung

A broken leg in a border town north of Seoul was supposed to end his athletic life. Instead it introduced him to Taekwondo — and began fifty years of teaching that reached from the Korean Army to Sydney to a dojang on Commerce Street.

    The Origin

    A LIFE BUILT One Belt

Grandmaster W.S. Jeung began training at eight years old in Paju, South Korea — a city at the western end of the DMZ that had absorbed some of the fiercest fighting of the Korean War.

He did not come to the art by choice. His leg was broken when he was struck by a truck, and there was open doubt about whether he would participate in physical activity again, let alone martial arts. The man who healed the leg became his first teacher.

Training began at Han Moo Kwan — han for Korea, moo for martial, kwan for hall. The Korean Martial School.

    MASTER Philip S. Jeung

"As long as I can remember, Taekwondo has been a part of my life. I began under the guidance of my father, who was strict about both my education and my training. Every day I woke up, went to school, and headed straight to the dojang. Every night we closed the dojang together."

"My well-worn black belt has aged just like my father's hair — once solid black, now marked with strands of white. Now it is my turn to honor his legacy by preserving this art and passing it on."
